How to recover from severe travel burnout and flight dread

Physical exhaustion and mental fatigue from back-to-back trips can leave you completely unable to plan new itineraries or face stepping onto an airplane. Pushing through this exhaustion causes deep dread toward flying, making it impossible to enjoy future trips or even handle flights over ten hours without severe strain.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Taking a break and stopping travel until the desire returns
  2. 2
Copying other people's itineraries to avoid planning fatigue
  3. 3
    Doing yoga retreats or staycations
  4. 4
Acting like a tourist locally within a 2-hour driving radius
  5. 5
Staying in the hotel for days doing nothing to rest
  6. 6
Transitioning to slow travel by staying in only 1-2 cities max
  7. 7
Trying the Argonne Antijetlag Diet or fasting 15 hours before waking time
  8. 8
Taking melatonin, magnesium, benadryl, or unisom
  9. 9
Using time-adjustment mobile apps like Timeshifter
  10. 10
Forcing early morning sunlight exposure and keeping rooms cool
  11. 11
Getting out of bed to read, journal, or listen to a podcast when unable to sleep
  12. 12
    taking medical leave or FMLA
  13. 13
    starting anti-depressant medication
  14. 14
talking to a doctor or holistic psychologist
  15. 15
quiet quitting and reducing daily effort
  16. 16
searching for a job at a different company with better boundaries

this last trip was just exhausting - constant driving, followed by a several hours flight which was painful to sit for longer than an hour.source ↗

I’d like to hear thoughts from others who’ve had a similar burnout and if you eventually overcame this after taking a break? I dread getting on a plane again.source ↗

I can’t handle flights over 10 hours for this reason. I also stay in 1-2 cities at max now and I can’t hop around so different areas like I used to.source ↗

First night after arriving, slept like 9 hours, 2nd night I was sure all was good, took my melatonin and magnesium before bed and then proceeded to just sleep in 20 minute power naps totally to around 2hrs in totalsource ↗

Every time, like clockwork, no matter what I did. The 2nd night was the hard one, and I didn’t always get ideal sleep on that night even if I followed the same protocol.source ↗
