How do you remove a stuck wheel bearing and axle without damaging it?

Wheel bearings and axles often seize tightly onto equipment frames due to rust and pressure, making them impossible to remove with standard pulling force. Attempting to force them off without the proper technique or specialized puller tools usually results in warped components and stripped hardware.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
    Hitting it with a hammer
  2. 2
Using channel locks to remove the dust cover and checking for a nut or roll pin
  3. 3
    Using an impact wrench
  4. 4
Locking two nuts together on the opposite side to separate or tighten
  5. 5
Gripping with pliers and pulling while unscrewing
  6. 6
Using a 2x4 with C-clamps and ratchet straps to brace a gear puller
  7. 7
Soaking with penetrating fluid like PB Blaster
  8. 8
Putting mounting bolts back in partway and hitting the heads with a sledgehammer
  9. 9
Driving a chisel into the gap to create separation
  10. 10
Using heat to expand the housing
  11. 11
Using a specialized hub buster tool
  12. 12
Pry with flathead screwdrivers or wood chisels
