How to keep a drain hose from popping out of a PVC pipe

Flexible drain tubes from pumps or dehumidifiers slip out of open PVC drain pipes under water pressure, leading to major water spills on the floor. Without a secure connection, these lines can also leave the pipe exposed and cause the P-trap to dry out, resulting in unpleasant odors.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Drill small holes in the PVC pipe and use a zip tie to hold the hose in place
  2. 2
Install a barbed coupling with hose clamps to extend the hose deeper into the pipe
  3. 3
using duct seal putty to pack around the hose
  4. 4
putting a plastic baggie over the top of the pipe held with a rubber band
  5. 5
using a specialized drain hose connector fitting

“Old house. The boiler condensation and dehumidifier feeds into a pump that drains to here with that plastic tube. It leaves the rest of the pipe exposed.”source ↗

“There’s a P-trap, and I have a feeling it dries out. This room stinks.”source ↗
