How to test an old or unplugged sump pump

When a sump pump has been unplugged for years, the motor might run while failing to clear the water because the basin needs enough water to activate it. To test the unit and its secondary floater redundancy system safely, pour water directly into the basin to see if it pumps correctly or if you need a replacement.
