How do you stop getting too attached to students?
Teachers form deep emotional bonds with students who make an impact or face severe hardships, making it heartbreaking when those kids suddenly disappear or move away. This ongoing worry and longing to know they are okay leaves teachers struggling to move on and process the loss long after the school year ends.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Accepting that with hundreds or thousands of students over time you cannot worry about them all
- 2Focusing long-term investment of time, energy, and emotional weight on your own children
- 3Doing the best you can with them for the 10 months you have them
- 4Accepting that saving every student is not the job
- 5Trying not to let yourself be too emotionally affected to avoid burnout
- 6Focusing on showing up at your best rather than internalizing the loss
