How to tell if a neighborhood stray cat is in heat

A stray cat in heat will show sudden behavioral changes like walking low to the ground, acting less inclined to be touched near the tail, or becoming unusually clingy while pushing her behind into the air. These signs make it difficult to determine how to safely handle her or introduce her to other cats without triggering aggressive reactions.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Taking the cat to the vet to get checked and microchipped
  2. 2
Keeping the cat indoors until she can be spayed
  3. 3
Waiting out the cycle while managing the behavioral changes
  4. 4
Keep an eye on the interaction and monitor for territorial spraying on doors and windows.
  5. 5
taking the cat in temporarily and sharing existing supplies
  6. 6
    looking into local shelters
  7. 7
    Leaving the cat outside
  8. 8
Adopting or taking in the stray cat

Recently over the last two days she has been acting strange within her movements, and has been less inclined for me to touch her, especially by the base of her tail and keeps walking very low to the ground.source ↗

Are they buddies or are they sizing each other up? Not sure if black kitty is a stray from the area colony or a neighbor’s if that matters at allsource ↗

We thought that she was no longer in heat, as I thought that’s why she was being very clingy last week and she always pushing her behind into the air.source ↗
