Best way to seal gaps around pipes under the sink?

Sealing holes around sink pipes blocks pests and improves appearance, but homeowners worry that materials like expanding foam will interfere with pipe access or cause expansion issues above a crawl space. This uncertainty prevents people from safely closing the gaps without risking future plumbing complications.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
    Using spray foam to seal around the spot where the pipes come through the wall
  2. 2
    Buying a sheet of quarter-inch plywood, cutting holes for the pipes, disconnecting the plumbing to fit it in place, painting it, and reconnecting the plumbing
  3. 3
    Caulking around the top and sides while leaving the underside open for ventilation
  4. 4
    using silicone
  5. 5
    using expandable spray foam
  6. 6
    packing with steel wool
  7. 7
    using a box escutcheon

I’m a first time home owner, I want to limit pest access and make this look better but I don’t want to do anything that’s a problem for the pipes or pipe access.source ↗

Before I place the new one one top should I fill these holes with the orange fireblock foam? Or will that cause issues with the pipes expansion? This is above a crawl space.source ↗

To answer your question though, yes always caulk/seal around any access point to keep water and critters out.source ↗
