Why is my toddler staying up until midnight refusing to sleep?

Toddlers are fighting bedtime hard and staying awake until midnight or two in the morning, regardless of whether they nap or skip naps entirely. This extreme resistance turns bedtime into a grueling one to two-hour battle and leaves parents completely exhausted, making it nearly impossible to function or get anything done during the day.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Kicking daytime naps unless she is clearly tired
  2. 2
Trying to wake her up early and adjust her sleep schedule
  3. 3
Repeatedly attempting to resettle her every 30 minutes to an hour
  4. 4
Letting her cry it out late at night
  5. 5
Trying different routines, sleep hygiene, awake windows, and breastfeeding changes
  6. 6
Experimenting with cosleeping and different rooms or beds
  7. 7
Enrolling the child in daycare to break sleep associations
  8. 8
Letting the child stay awake and accepting challenging behavior

“Now, for the two months or so she’s been refusing to nap at all during the day half the time, and other times needs a nap and it doesn’t matter if it’s a 30 min nap or a 2 hour nap- if she naps she is up until 12am at least.”source ↗
