Like many of you, when I started looking for clients, I was overwhelmed by anecdotal advice: "Just cold email," "Use Upwork," "Network in person."source ↗

It’s been slow and honestly painful trying to get traction.source ↗

So now I’m left wondering: is bookkeeping really that much of a dying field? Are clients fewer and further between? Or is there still a path forward for someone like me who doesn’t want to be a CPA, but does want to grow a sustainable business built on strong client relationships?source ↗

I offer a pretty niche service on a few platforms, and honestly, I was very close to giving up on it entirely.source ↗

One of the biggest questions for me right now is getting the first customers. I don’t really have an existing network of potential business clients that I could start with, so I’d be especially interested in hearing from people who started in a similar situation.source ↗

At the moment, it's still a side business since I'm employed full-time. One thing I learned early on: I spent quite a bit of money and effort on cold emails and Instagram ads. For me, neither worked, mainly because I had no references or track record at the time.source ↗

I do wish more CPA firms would be willing to mentor and hire bookkeepers. I’m stuck in the “not enough experience” to get hired at a place, but educated enough to do basic level AR/AP, reconciling and general recording. If I can’t find someone to work for, I’ll just start working at low level, doing low cost services anyway. I like bookkeeping a lot. I just don’t have enough experience and firms don’t “want to train”. It’s frustrating.source ↗
