How to manage a classroom without being the mean teacher

Enforcing rules often feels completely outside your character and unnatural. When you hold students accountable, they may interpret you as being mean or scary, which hurts your feelings even if administrators see it as a sign of respect. This emotional friction makes classroom management exhausting and leaves you feeling like you can't get a grip on it.

“The kids often interpret me as being mean or scary. That is the general school consensus. I know that’s great and my admin even reassures me that it’s a good thing lol bc it means they respect me and know I have high expectations and hold them accountable. But it still hurts my feelings in the background to be honest yall. I don’t wanna be the mean teacher.”source ↗

“It’s scary being the “mean” teacher cuz I don’t feel like it at all, I just feel like I’m being a normal reasonable teacher holding my students accountable and trying to teach them.”source ↗
