Why does Etsy automatically refund buyers without seller approval?
Marketplace support closes customer disputes and issues refunds instantly without reviewing shop policies or seller input. This leaves merchants out of pocket for both the item cost and shipping fees after buyers misuse products or demand unearned returns months later.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Contacting customer service to appeal cases
- 2Sending emails to the executive team
- 3Walking customers through instructions with pictures
- 4Refusing to sell high-value items or international orders on the platform
- 5Switching to alternative selling platforms like eBay or personal Shopify stores
- 6Breaking large custom orders into multiple smaller listings under $250
- 7Disputing charges directly through the bank
- 8refusing to allow any modifications to certain dishes
- 9warning customers beforehand that heavily modified dishes are non-refundable and will not be removed from the bill
- 10banning problematic customers or declining to accommodate custom orders
- 11Contacting the carrier to investigate or verify GPS delivery coordinates
- 12Asking the customer to check with neighbors, inside the house, or at the local post office
- 13Requiring a police report for suspected porch piracy before issuing a refund
- 14Resending the order or issuing a refund to avoid negative reviews
- 15Comping the item completely
- 16Asking for 50 percent of the item price instead of a full comp
- 17filing a credit card chargeback
- 18Refunding the customer without requiring them to return the item to save on shipping costs
- 19Offering a replacement alongside a refund
- 20Refusing returns on food products entirely
