Why can't I downgrade my subscription tier?

Support representatives often promise that accounts can be downgraded later, but billing teams will deny the request or intentionally stall the process when you actually try. This traps you into continuing to pay for a more expensive tier, even if the initial upgrade was caused by a simple employee mistake.

What the numbers show

Counted from the threads quoted below. How we count

  • The most recent one is from October 2026.
  • This comes up 206.0× more often in r/hubspot than across the site as a whole.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
create a new account and move everything over
  2. 2
get a written inventory of what will and will not transfer
  3. 3
switch to alternative software like Zoho
  4. 4
Reaching out to the account manager to ask for a one-time goodwill gesture to roll back the change.
  5. 5
Setting a cap on marketing contacts in the platform settings to prevent future mistakes.
  6. 6
Keeping usage under the limit, taking screenshots, and pushing for written confirmation that the next invoice drops back down.
